"John managed to combine excellent academic knowledge with an emotive and very genuine stance - excellent to develop the students' understanding and leave them armed with a selection of superb case studies ahead of the exam period."
A-Level Sessions
Please be aware that the Passage roadshow is currently unavailable. If you would like any further information please contact the Baca Project directly via their online contact form.
Our teaching team comprising Geography graduates and staff with first hand experience from working within the asylum system in the UK offer specifically tailored A-level and GCSE sessions.
In line with current curriculum specifications, these generally cover:
- the causes and consequences of flows of refugees and asylum seekers into developed economies both from a historical and current dimension;
- housing;
- repatriation;
- the attitudes and values of migrants and hosts; and
- human rights.
Housing is looked at with regards to the National Assistance Act, what Baca's rebuild team offer within our organisation and the National Asylum Support Service.
The attitudes of hosts (in the UK) is considered in terms of the influence of media and the arts, issues surrounding Islamaphobia and discussion around a selection of film clips and newspaper headlines.
The attitudes of migrants is poignantly examined through an interview with an asylum seeker or refugee living in the UK, who is able to offer a first hand account of their experiences, reasons for coming to England and analysis of the asylum system and their treatment in this country.
Human rights is taught against the context of the Human Right's Act and refugees' entitlements and the Dublin Convention. The challenge of age assement and the response to unaccompanied minors arriving in the UK is considered in some depth.
An example of a possible lesson plan for a single A-level session can be found here.
